150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi has been one of the biggest proponents of sanitation and hygiene in modern times. The month of October was celebrated as the month for "Gandhi and Swachhata" by MDWS, undertaking various activities, ranging from a Gandhian seminar in Wardha, Maharashtra, to a series of workshops across the country. The four day long Mahatama Gandhi International Sanitation Convention in New Delhi and the fortnight long Swachhata Hi Seva campaign also culminated on 2nd October, Swachh Bharat Diwas.

Swachh Bharat workshops on sustainable sanitation
With the workshop in Nagpur, the MDWS kicked off a series of regional review meetings on sustainable sanitation, in October. The regional workshops will cover a range of quality and sustainability indicators. The workshops will be held in Chennai, Guwahati, Kolkata and Nainital covering all regions in the country in November 2018.

Swachhata Pakhwada Highlights
October, 2018
Launched in April 2016, this is an initiative under the Swachh Bharat Mission. Swachhata Pakhwada is inspired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's vision to engage all Union Ministries and Departments in Swachhata-related activities, thereby making Swachhata "everyone's business".

Ministry of Panchayati Raj
(1st-15th October)
- “Gramoday Sankalp” brought out jointly by MoPR, MoRD and MDWS, was made public on 2nd October. This covered issues concerning cleanliness and sanitation and best practices of well-performing Gram Panchayats
- Announcement for Panchayat Awards–2019 under three categories comprising sanitation as one of the major thematic areas / indicators was made in the run-up to the Swachhata Pakhwada
- Special Gram Sabha meetings were conducted on 2nd October at several places across the country followed by special cleanliness drives

- Shramdaan activities were undertaken by the Secretary and other senior officers at Chouhtana village of Agra district
- Swachhata awareness campaigns were taken up through observance of Swachhata Hi Seva
- SHG members in National Rural Livelihood Mission undertook Swachhata Shramdaan

(16th-31st October)
- Minister, M/o Food Processing Industries released a booklet on waste to wealth technology prepared by Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology
- Confederation of Indian Industry conducted an awareness session on food safety for food handlers of hospital canteens
- Best Mega Food Parks and Cold Chain Units were awarded by Minister, MoFPI
- ASSOCHAM, DICCI, NIFTEM and CII organized Swachhata awareness activities for the street vendors, and school children, also distributed hygiene kits

- Swachhata Pakhwada was organized by all establishments under Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM)
- Awareness programme on energy conservation and proper utilization of green energy at mine premises organized by M/s Dalmia Cements Bharat Ltd., East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya
- Massive school awareness activities, distribution of hygiene kits and plantation drives across India. Children were informed about the importance of cleanliness in schools in mines areas by Swachhata Doots

- Installation of vermicompost and bio compost at HPL, Ghaziabad
- Quiz competition was conducted for the patients at OPD of AIIA ( All India Institute of Ayurveda, Delhi)
- Hand wash training, disease prevention through Siddha system of Medicine and massive hygienic protection awareness sessions at Central Council for Research in Siddha Medicine
- Maintenance of anganwadi school building of adopted Rasam Village by North Eastern Institute of Folk medicine, Pasighat, Arunanchal Pradesh.
